Kye dob. 1996 (Rhesus monkey-Macaca mulatta)
Kye is the product of the UK primate pet trade. He lived the first part of his life in a family home, but after becoming too large, he was taken to an animal sanctuary where he lived in a small cage. Kye witnessed appalling scenes, when a monkey living near him was shot with an air rifle by vandals, resulting in that monkey losing an arm.
Kye has suffered terribly over the years both physically and psychologically. His legs are deformed due to rickets and his emotional fragility is very apparent. When he first arrived at Lakeview, Kye would throw himself around his cage in pure terror if approached by an unknown human. If he saw another monkey, he would bite himself inflicting cuts and bruises from the stress.
Now, Kye is calm and relaxed. He communicates with the other monkeys who live near him and although he finds it too traumatic to live with another monkey in his enclosure, he happily vocalises to all around him.
To keep his mind and body stimulated and stress free, Kye is offered regular enrichment activities and warm, soft blankets that he wraps himself up in at night to sleep.
